The Tenanted Pub Company Summit and Dinner 2018 was the flagship event in the tenanted pub industry’s calendar, celebrating the tenanted and leased pub sector being back in the headlines thanks to a series of high-profile investments. Heineken and Patron Capital’s acquisition of Punch – in a deal valuing the UK’s second largest pub co at £1.8bn – and the backing by C&C Group and Proprium of the £230m-rated Admiral Taverns, have shown the value investors see in the sector.
At the heart of a pub sector worth over £22bn a year, the tenanted and leased sector is primed for success – having completed a period of consolidation and arguably facing much less exposure to current headwinds than its managed and more food-led competitors. The Pubs Code, which was introduced in July 2016, has had a fundamental impact but that it has emerged leaner and more competitive with an evolved relationship with publicans.
